12th June 2008

The divepool has now been completed and names are being given to the formations. This weekend, Dave Lewis is doing a 'warm up' weekend and Simon Cathrine is also doing an invitational event at Hib. A full list of the dive draw will be posted here shortly along with the rules.

14th January 2008

This year's event has been scheduled for the 12th and 13th July 2008. Practice and build-up events will be scheduled soon. If you are interested in taking part, let us know.

28th June 2007

Its the final few days before the competition. James is flying the 2nd Dornier G92 back from Skydive Spain. Noel is working out the final details for the BBQ on Saturday night including a huge selection of fresh salads. Tickets for the food will be sold on the Saturday morning onwards. Both the 28-way and 14-way dive draws have been completed and everything is set.

7th June 2007

Many of you may be wondering what happens when the weather is not good enough for 2 aircraft to fly in formation together, but is good enough for an altitude load. Well, on a round by round basis, each team will split in 2 and do 14-way skydives from a divepool of randoms and blocks. Simon Brentford has just finished off the divepool which will be used if needed and contains enough formations to satisfy the competition.

31st May 2007

Dave Lewis has just released the rules for the competition. The format is very similar to last years event, except that this time we have a dive pool which will be used to create each of the 5 rounds.

GENERAL

bullet All participants will accept these rules as binding on entering the competition.
bullet Competition will have a start and end time dictated by the DZ Operator and Officials at the end of the registration period.
bullet Teams may register up to the Saturday morning preceding the actual competition start.
bullet There will be a minimum of one round to call a meet. In the event of the minimum number of rounds not being completed the competition will be continued at the DZ Operators convenience.

DOCUMENTATION

All competitors on booking in will produce the following:

bullet Valid BPA membership.
bullet Current Medical declaration or Doctor's certificate.
bullet Log Book.

EQUIPMENT

Each individual is responsible for supplying their own equipment, which should consist of:

bullet A serviceable main and reserve parachute, container and harness.
bullet An equipment inspection record and a reserve packing card.
bullet A serviceable altimeter and suitable helmet, clothing and footwear.

THE EVENT 28-WAY SEQUENTIAL

bullet Each team will consist of a twenty eight team members including two Team Captains plus two Camera flyers. Four alternates may be nominated, but the Team Captains must do so before the start of the competition or with the judges/ team captains' consent at a later time.
bullet Each of the five rounds will consist of two formations, these can be built and transitioned to in any way the team likes either as a complete break or by flying pieces, unless a specific 'Inter' is shown. A sixth round will be used as a jump off or depending on time may be used at the judges discretion, this will be decide before jumping starts on the second day.
bullet In the event it is not possible to fly aircraft in formation, but is still ok for jumping the teams will be split into two half, each halve will have fourteen members including one Team Captain and one Camera flyer. A 14way dive sheet will be issued, the two sub-teams will both do the same dives and their collective scores will be added together. This combined score will become the score for the next round.
bullet Each round will only count towards a team final score if, every team has completed that round and the same dive pool and aircraft type has been used.
bullet The judging will be from top shot camera and this camera must remain in this position throughout the whole skydive, the second camera can be above or below and can or may be used at judges discretion. During judging the use of the pause function will be allowed and if needed slow motion functions.
bullet There is no set working time, all rounds will be form the same exit altitude (to be confirmed on the day) and each team will be expected to break off in at least two waves, final decision will be made by the CCI (Chief Centre Instructor) at the start of the event, any team failing to comply to these rules will be disqualified from the competition.

SCORING SYSTEM

bullet For judging purposes each completed formation executed correctly will score one point. Falling to show an Inter or deliberately missing a formation will result in one point being removed.
bullet In the event of a tie a jump-off should take place, weather/time permitting, at the Judges discretion. If a `jump-off' is not possible the team with the fastest build in the last completed round will be declared the winner.

2nd May 2007

Dive Pools for this years competition have been released. There will be 3 categories of difficulty - warm Up dives, 2nd level and 3rd level.

A pool of dives has been created which will be pulled out of the hat to make 3 rounds of competition. The objective is to complete all 6 rounds of competition and therefore complete 50% of the formations in the dive pool. So for example, there are 4 dives in the warm up category of which 2 will be selected. The same is the case for the other 2 levels of difficulty. This makes the event impartial and stops teams gaining the advantage by practicing rounds in advance.

  Old News
  10th July

As is usual, Target Skysports pulled out all the stops to support what is becoming a very popular annual event. Team names being Hibnosis (Hibaldstow), Herding Cats (Langar) and 28 Hour Party People (mixed).

Competition briefing started the Saturday at 0830 and the first team was in the air by 0915. A crowd of people were on hand on the ground to watch the aircraft running in and the first formation being built over the DZ, accompanied by cries of “go on, get in” by the ‘experts’ on the ground!

The formation flying by the pilots, Tony De Brugen and James Swallow, looked awesome from the ground and even better from the aircraft. From the G92 the Skyvan exits looked amazing and watching the G92 from the tail of the Skyvan was impressive too. A lot of people on their first 28 Way were amazed at the skill of the pilots flying in formation.

The Team Captains, Simon Cathrine, Simon Brentford & Dave Lewis were excellent in keeping their teams focussed and motivated throughout the day and were really impressive with the way they worked on big way skills & safety with all team members.

Herding Cats took an early lead, which they maintained throughout, although both Hibnosis and 28 Hour Party People looked a threat on some of the rounds. Hibnosis managed to complete all 6 rounds by Saturday night, despite several ‘guest’ appearances from various members of the Hib Staff, Herding Cats and 28 Hour Party People completing 5 rounds by close of play on Saturday night.

The bar soon got busy, helped by Gregster, who was DJ for the night. Sadly, there was quite a bit of ‘Dad’ dancing going on by the end of the night. Unfortunately, Sunday started with poor weather which gradually got worse. Team Captains decided to call the Competition on Round 5, the final scores being:

More photos can be found here.

3rd July
Aircraft booked for the 28-way are now confirmed as G-92 and Skyvan. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

30th June
The team captains have had a get together to review the formations issued earlier on in June and we have decided to make the event harder!. So please take a look at the new formations below.
Final arrangements are being made for food which will consist of a BBQ for Saturday night.

10th June
In 2005, there were 2 teams headed by Simon Brentford and Dave Lewis. This year a third team has been added to the line-up.

Team Captains
Simon Cathrine  Made up mostly of Hibaldstow jumpers
Dave Lewis  Made up mainly of Langar jumpers
Simon Brentford  A mixture of Hibaldstow, Scotland, Cark and Weston jumpers

9th June
More information has now been released for the competition. The dive pool is printed below and in addition, Dave and Simon have now cleared up some of the grey areas which affected the judging of last years' event.
Last year, there was contention over points given to teams who had moved on to the second formation without completing the first point. Originally, it had been decided to allow teams to move on to the next point if it was obvious one of their members had gone low and had no chance of returning to the formation. In principle, this is a great idea, but in practice how do you decide if a team waited long enough for a team-mate to make it back?

Well this year, things have become a little stricter. Any team who move onto the second point without completing the previous formation (with all the members in place), will not score any points. A point is awarded for each person in their slot on a formation. So for example:

bullet Round A 27 team members make it onto the formation and no further formations are completed - 27 points.
bullet Round B 28 team members complete the first formation, but only 10 members of the base build for the second formation - 38 points.
bullet Round C 27 team members make it onto the first formation and the second formation - 27 points.

Full rules for the event can be downloaded here including entry forms and the dive pool in printable format.

15th March
We have changed the date scheduled for the 28-way event to the weekend 8/9th July. We needed to ensure that there enough aircraft at the dropzone to host the event. Team leaders Simon Brentford and Dave Lewis are currently in the process of recruiting for this event.

26th January
Many people have wondered if the 28-way competition would go ahead again and we are pleased to say that yes it will. Dates have just been released for June 24-25th. Dates have been moved forward this year because of conflicts with other courses, boogies and competitions.
If you are interested in taking part, please let the dropzone know.

18th August 2005
Unfortunately, the other 2 teams were not able to complete and so this weekend we will have 2 teams competing. However, they are decent teams so there will still be an excellent competition atmosphere.
We are going to have a range of cameraman filming the event... Brian Knight, Nigel Rowlan, Andy Wezley, Andy Cliff and Rob Simpson. They will capture the angels from the point of view of scoring and for getting good stills for the mag.

The name for Simon Brentford's team has also just been announced... But I'm A Lady.

13th July 2005
More information coming in. A lot of people will have to travel some distance. Therefore, the start time will be 09:00 am on the Saturday and the finish time 17:00 on the Sunday. This includes handing out of the trophy. We are also in the process of buying a new trophy for this event - no plaques, shields or other tat will be considered!
Round 6 has also been posted. It is by far the hardest round and should pose a challenge even for the best teams.

4th July 2005
Dave Lewis brought a complete group of 28 to team train at Hibaldstow last weekend. They did 8 jumps in good hot weather improving jump by jump. The last jump almost completed 3 points. Dave has also finally announced that his team is Herding Cats after the difficulties he faced gathering everyone to the dirt dive. Please click here for photos of the event. After some discussion there is also a change in the rules. Most notably:

bullet Each attempted formation will be awarded 1 point for each person correctly in their slot. Therefore a 3 point round will gain 86 points (3 x 28).
bullet Inters will not exist between blocks. If a grip were to separate where it would not normally do so, the point could still be awarded as long as the grip was retaken before the next formation keyed. A good example of this is in Round 1.

Photos of the 28-way practice weekend can be found here.

27th June 2005
It has been confirmed today that a third team is in the planning. Paul Seymour is team captain and is recruiting mainly from Netheravon and Headcorn. If you are interested in taking part please contact the dropzone or email them at info@skydiving.co.uk. A fourth team is also in the planning but will make an announcement as they near completion later. This looks set to be a huge event.

23rd June 2005

Two teams have now been completed - Dave Lewis and Simon Brentford. 2 more teams are in the planning but details will not be released until they are nearly complete.

Dave Lewis brought a group of 14 to Hibaldstow over the last weekend 18-19th. They did 8 training jumps all of them building and most getting several points. Brian Knight was on hand to take pictures which can be found here.

The BCPA are also in preparation for a 14-way record jump on July 16-17th. Their proposed formation will be like the photo on the left.

10th April 2005

Welcome to the web page dedicated to 28-way. We are hosting a 28-way competition from 2 Dornier G-92's on the 20-21st August. The aircraft have been booked, we have checked that it does not conflict with any national competitions or other boogies. So far we have 3 definite teams confirmed as:

bullet Simon Brentford - Hibaldstow team
bullet Dave Lewis - Hibaldstow and Langar team

Interest has been shown from a possible team from Netheravon and the Dutch at Skydive Texel are being asked to put a team together. Rules and regulations, 28-way dive pool have already been released and can be found below.
Because this is a weekend competition the organisers have also made backup arrangements in the event that formation loads cannot take place (e.g. low visibility at altitude) whereby each team will do 2 x 14-ways and the scores will be cumulated.

In the evening, Target Skysports will put on entertainment with live music, DJ's and a 'pig roast'!
